Create an Environment for a Character

For this project I was given 18 hours to create a background for a character designed my one of my fellow Digital Media Design (DMD) classmates. I was very busy during this project, so I finished it early. I’m proud of the rendering and lineart, but I’m not very confident in the color palette. I wanted the colors to be very atmospheric and eerie, but I think it looks kind of strange instead.

I chose Zoe Chen’s character, Lucio, because in his story, Lucio lives in a rundown apartment in New York. I decided to make a night time background in an alleyway with a bright blue street light just off screen.

Once I compiled all my references, I started sketching. I kept the sketch very loose so it wouldn’t take to much time and because I already had an idea of I wanted to do. I wanted to have a bunch of leading lines and make use of the composition so you would focus on the character.

The rendering was simultaneously very fun and incredibly hard. I don’t use texture brushes a lot so I had a hard time figuring out what objects should or shouldn’t have texture. For the shading, I decided to do hard cell shading using angular shapes. I tested several iterations of color palettes, including some with more realistic colors, but I found it hard to make them look vibrant and cohesive with itself and the character.

2D Animation Production

For this project I was tasked with directing a animation not exceeding 2:30 minuts about the helpfulness of IoT (Internet of things) devises in helping the environment. We decided to tell the story of a little kid being taught the lesson by a sentient microwave computer named Wavie. My biggest challenge for this project was communication I often struggled to communicate my ideas with my team which lead to confusion later on in the process.

Storyboard & Animatic:

As the director storyboarding and making the animatic were a part of my job once we figured out the story it only took about a day to finish the storyboard and a few days to make the animatic.

Animation Project

For this project I was tasked with creating a 15 + second animation in 30 hours. I decided to make it about my webcomic concept, a sapphic Robin Hood retelling. The hardest thing about this project was managing my ambition with the project versus the deadline. But in the end I managed to finish just in time.

Storyboard:

I am more comfortable with storyboarding traditional so I planed my animation in my sketchbook.

Character Exploration:

For this project because I was already planing on making this a story I decided to spend some of my free time doing some character and world exploration!
