Mood board for my graphic novel!

Project: For my skills showcase I chose to decide my own project and decided to create a short graphic novel. I created this story to show my understanding of my Graphic Design course. I was given 30 hours(10 school days) to complete my showcase. I used mainly photoshop, but also google docs and drive for other aspects.

My story, A Sign, is about how two girls, Clementine and Aria, meet. It’s told from Clementine’s perspective, and it’s set in the 21st century. Clementine is an introverted artist who struggles with making friends, making past years at high school difficult. Determined to make a change for her junior year, she looks for a sign leading her to meet Aria. Aria, her complete opposite, encourages Clementine to join a dance committee she’s a part of.

Something I struggled with while making it was the length. I had originally planned to complete their story for my showcase but realized I would not have time within my time limit. Another thing I struggled with was keeping the designs and art style the same in every panel. I was able to overcome my length problem by shortening the originally 4 chapters to just 1. I do however, plan to continue creating their relationship in the future!

To create it I used my basic skills as a digital artist and my understanding of people in situations like Clementines. I was also heavily inspired to create their relationships by other queer relationships like Nick and Charlie from Alice Oseman’s Heartstopper and me and my girlfriend’s very own relationship. Other than those I was inspired by many other things, some of which can be shown on my mood board at the very top of this page.
