About This Project:
The project was completed over a week and a half, including concept development, sketches, and multiple revisions. One major challenge was keeping Sunny’s proportions and details consistent across all four views. I used horizontal guidelines and visual checkpoints to ensure key features, such as the antennae, hair, and clothing folds. Another challenge was figuring out what she would like. I picked greens and blues for her palette and gave her casual clothing to make her feel grounded, despite her being a green with antennae.
About This Project:
My “Skills Showcase Digital Media Production” project actually started completely differently. I wanted it to be a standard cowboy western, but after reading the project guidelines, I realized it had to be a PSA. So, I decided to pivot the story’s animatic, but I still kept the cowboy theme.
I created cowboy movie-style sets, as all the characters are technically actors. My aim was to make the scenes creative while maintaining the western theme of the characters. I used my design skills to construct a Hollywood set environment that resembled an old cowboy set.
About Lil Carmen and Cactáceo:
These are the main characters in the PSA animatic. Lil Carmen is an energetic, joyful, bubbly character, so I wanted to use rounded shapes like circles and ovals in her design for shape language because rounder shapes suggest friendliness and approachability. In contrast, her dad Cactáceo uses triangles for his shape language to show that he is more intense, serious, and edgy, and not as friendly on the surface, but he’s actually pretty sensitive, shy, and big softy. Even though they’re father and daughter, I didn’t want them to be identical, and I thought they would be great main characters for my animatic. I wanted to show their father-daughter bond at the start of the PSA.
About Tumble The Bandit:
Tumble the Bandit or Mr. Tumbleweed, the comedic bully troublemaker of the PSA, embodies the kind of person who behaves rudely, disruptively, and meanly towards others without a valid reason, much like bullies. Interestingly, he leads the other two bandits in the PSA. He holds the distinction of being my favorite character that I designed for this project. Since actual tumbleweeds are composed of roots, I found it amusing to depict his eyes as floating in his head and his mouth as roots forming a mustache. Moreover, I wanted him to be the second shortest character in the animation, even shorter than Lil Carmen. He’s simply a funny jerk.
About Vera and Barrel Bill:
Vera and Barrel Bill are the other two bully bandits featured in the PSA. They serve as the henchmen of Tumble the bandit. Vera is the dangerous and fierce character, named after the Aloe Vera plant. Barrel Bill, on the other hand, is the dumb brute character, named after the Barrel Cactus Plant. “I know these character names are super deep, thank you.”
